Post-surgical rehabilitation

After an operation the hard part is not knowing what week you are in. Meera Raghavan runs this side of the practice, follows your surgeon's protocol closely, and writes the milestones down so you can see where you are and what is next.

A corner of the practice with elbow crutches leaning against the wall beside a low plinth and a folded blanket.

A typical post-operative timeline

Step along the timeline to see what each phase is for. This is the general shape of recovery after a larger joint operation — your surgeon's protocol always comes first, and we work to that.

Week 1 to 2

What we work on, week 1 to 2

The early aim is calm, dull and unglamorous: swelling down, wound settled, and the joint moving through the range your surgeon has allowed. We follow the protocol you were discharged with to the letter, and we contact the surgeon's rooms if anything in it is unclear rather than improvising.

In focus

  • Swelling and pain management
  • Protected range of movement
  • Safe walking, transfers and stairs

Indicative timeframes for a demonstration site. Every operation and every person differs, and nothing here replaces the instructions from your surgeon.

Operations we rehabilitate most often

  • Total knee and total hip replacement
  • Knee arthroscopy and meniscal surgery
  • ACL reconstruction
  • Rotator cuff repair and shoulder stabilisation
  • Wrist, ankle and shoulder fractures after immobilisation
  • Spinal decompression and fusion, with the surgeon's clearance
  • Achilles tendon repair

Talking to your surgeon

We work from the written protocol you were discharged with, and if it is not clear we ring the rooms rather than guess. Short progress notes go back at the points the surgeon asks for them.

If you cannot get here yet

For the first fortnight after a larger operation, Tom takes home visits across the eastern suburbs so the early work is not missed while you are not driving.
